Choosing an RF passive component is rarely just about finding the right frequency.
For filters, power dividers, couplers and balun transformers, several parameters can directly affect the performance and reliability of the entire RF chain.
Here are the key points we recommend checking during component selection:
🔹 1. Frequency & Bandwidth
Make sure the operating frequency and required bandwidth match the actual system requirements—not just the nominal center frequency.
🔹 2. Insertion Loss
Lower insertion loss generally means less signal loss and better overall system efficiency. For high-frequency applications, even a small difference can matter.
🔹 3. Rejection / Isolation
For RF filters, check out-of-band rejection.
For power dividers and couplers, isolation and directivity may be equally important.
🔹 4. Power Handling
Consider CW, peak and pulsed power separately. The required power rating should also be evaluated together with frequency and operating temperature.
🔹 5. VSWR & Impedance
50 Ω is common in RF systems, but the actual impedance, return loss and VSWR requirements should always be confirmed before selection.
🔹 6. Package & Integration
SMT, wire bonding, coaxial connectors and cavity structures may require completely different component solutions.
🔹 7. Temperature & Reliability
For automotive, radar, aerospace and satellite applications, temperature range and long-term reliability can be just as important as RF performance.
Before requesting an RF component, try to define:
Frequency → Bandwidth → Impedance → Insertion Loss → Rejection/Isolation → Power → VSWR → Temperature → Package → Quantity
Once these parameters are clear, component matching becomes much easier.
